Goal
To decrease the proportion of North Carolinians who are overweight

Objective 1.
Among adolescents aged 12-17, reduce from 20% (1997)  to 15% the proportion that are overweight.

Discussion:  There was an increase from 11% (1998-1994) to 16% in 2000 (NHANES),

Objective 2:
Among those 18 and over, reduce from 32% (1997) to 20% the proportion of adults who are overweight.

Discussion:  Instead of moving towards the 1999 objective to reduce to 20% the proportion of adults who are overweight, the rate increased to 36.9% (BRFSS, 2003). Weight loss attempts may or may not be healthy, with 38.6%% of adults trying to lose weight (BRFSS 2003). According to BRFSS in 2003, 65.1% of adults were exercising to lower their risk of developing heart disease or stroke.
