Focusing public health hypertension control efforts towards the entire population of NC is critical to reduce or shift the risk curve.
In a state where the eastern counties are part of the "buckle" of the nation's stroke belt, and population characteristics reflect those at highest risk for hypertension (aging; high percentage of African-Americans; overweight; sedentary; low fruit, vegetable, and calcium intake) increased resources must be directed to public awareness programs and policies to control high blood pressure.
The Strike Out Stroke initiative must be reinstituted and integrated with new efforts to create community support for programs and services that reduce and control hypertension.
