Goal
To increase the proportion of North Carolinians with high blood pressure who keep this risk factor under control.

Previous Objective 1:  Among adults, increase from 94% (1997) to 98% by 2003 the proportion of adults who have had their blood pressure checked within the past two years.
Discussion: 2001 BRFSS data indicate that 96.7% of North Carolinians had their blood pressure checked within the preceding two years.  CDC did not include this question in 2003.

Updated Objective 1:  By 2010, maintain at 95% or more the proportion of adults who have had their BP checked in the preceding two years. (Source: BRFSS, Baseline 96.7% in 2001)

Previous Objective 2: Increase to at least 75% by 2003 the proportion of primary care providers who assess, counsel, and refer for lifestyle change (and when necessary, drug therapy) at levels of blood pressure consistent with current management guidelines.
Discussion: Currently there are no statewide surveillance data available to track the percentage of providers assessing, counseling, and referring for lifestyle change consistent with current guidelines. For the time being, this objective is being dropped.

Updated Objective 2: Increase yearly the number of NC primary care providers that have participated in either the Diabetes or Cardiovascular tracks of the BPH Collaborative or the NC Chronic Disease Management Collaborative (Source: NCCHCA)
