Because of the change in program focus, from 2005-2010 the HDSP Program will support the PAN Branch and other partners in achieving their objectives as outlined in the North Carolina Blueprint for Changing Policies and Environments in Support of Healthy Eating and other goals and objectives as they evolve.

  1. Educate consumers regarding the benefits of choosing foods that meet The USDA’s Dietary Guidelines (USDA).
  2. Support and promote the availability of healthy foods in NC communities, particularly in dining out venues (restaurants, etc) and schools.

Program Services
Support the programmatic efforts of PAN and partner organizations to achieve nutrition goals such as:
  • Continue to support the expansion of the Winner’s Circle Healthy Dining Program and Healthy Eating Program to provide point of purchase education to consumers.
  • Continue to support the Lowes Foods program which shelf tags all items identified as “heart healthy” by AHA criteria to provide point of purchase support for healthier grocery selections.
  • Build on the success of the Black Churches United for Better Health project to increase fruit and vegetable consumption in faith communities working with the Eat Smart Move More … North Carolina Initiative and the PAN Branch, which has developed a planning and resource guide titled "African American Churches Eating Smart and Moving More: A Planning and Resource Guide."

Public Awareness
  • Support social marketing campaigns targeting priority populations that incorporate healthy eating messages into every campaign.

Policy
  • Support the incorporation of a comprehensive and integrated nutrition curriculum that is continuous from K–12th grade into NC public schools (Lead agency: Healthy Schools, Department of Public Instruction).
  • Support Eat Smart North Carolina’s Recommended Standards For All Foods Available in School.
  • Continue to support the BASIC Initiative to increase the coverage of preventive benefits among NC health insurers, and use of the Starting the Conversation Tools among health care providers.

  • Support school-based nutrition trainings for school teams across the state.
  • Support Color Me Healthy training, which offers nutrition and physical activity training to preschool teams across the state.

Public Awareness
  • Continue to support the Lowe’s Foods Start With Your Heart in-store shelf labeling program of all heart healthy items.

Policy
  • Ensure that Eat Smart North Carolina’s Recommended Standards For All Foods Available in School move from recommendation to implementation in all schools.
  • Support implementation of the NC 5 A Day Coalition: Strategic Plan to Increase Fruit and Vegetable Consumption 2004-2010.
