Stroke Treatment Options

As you learned, there are three types of stroke. Treatments vary for each type. Treatments include:

TIAs (Transient Ischemic Attacks). Those who have experienced a TIA need a thorough work-up to identify its causes. Then, they need to address those causes with lifestyle changes, and possibly medical treatments.

Ischemic Stroke. A large percentage of ischemic strokes can be treated with clot-busters such as t-PA, anticoagulants, and angioplasty/stents but only if the patient arrives at the hospital in time.

Hemorrhagic strokes. Hemorrhagic strokes can be treated with surgery or other vascular procedures. Diagnostic procedures could include a neurological exam, a CT scan, MRI scan, a Doppler ultrasound, or an arteriogram.
